Cicadas' Voice

Weekly Topic: What makes you feel that summer has finally arrived?

Aug 2, 2021

For those of us who live in the southern hemisphere, summer is far away. Still, I can’t complain about cold or anything like it. I live in Brasilia where, although this is the dry, cold season, we get warm sunny days under pristine blue skies. Yet, I know that it’s not summer because the peak of summer comes with the cicadas’ voice. When their voice becomes not a noise in the background but a sound you can’t ignore, a sound that overwhelms you, then, it is summer.

I love haiku, and cicadas are a common reference to summer and a symbol of the transience of life. Some time ago, on a summer afternoon while I was walking my dog, and the cicadas’ voice was the only thing you could hear, I felt as if I was immersed in a haiku, so I wrote this:

Cicadas’ voice everywhere

In the summer’s heat

What’s this if not a haiku?

せみのなきごえ

あついなつ

これこそ俳句

If you like haiku, and want to talk about it, book my 20-minute lesson called “What are you reading? English Conversation/ English level: beginner, intermediate, or advanced depending on your level”. In this lesson you can practice your English by talking about what you like to read. I’d love to discuss haiku or anything you’re reading this summer!
