A candy snack that originated in my country, the beautiful South Africa

PRUDENCE B

KOEKSISTERS

This is a proudly South African snack, which consists of twisted, deep fried dough covered in syrup or honey.  The origins of this delicious comfort food snack is attributed to a recipe that was first introduced to South Africa by the Dutch who came in 1652 and has since been one of our favourite snack, it has in recent years been made popular by the Afrikaans speaking people of South Africa, with the afrikaans word koek meaning cake in English.  It's taste is close to that of a doughnut but not excactly like it.

Koeksisters, doughnuts and such snacks are very popular in schools fund raising events, mainly because they're made by mothers of these pupils from scratch, with such love and care. Adults enjoy these snacks with a cup of tea, mostly in the afternoon and they're popular with the elderly, they also have a long shelf life, with makes them easily accessible at convinient stores and grocery shops.  If you ever visit South Africa, ask for a koeksister with your tea or coffee and experience a burst of flavour and taste in your mouth!
