Description

PPP Method

Warmer
Examples to understand students level of modal verbs. This is just a Q&A to get the student takling.

Can you tell me about what sports you can play?
What dishes can you cook?
What languages can you speak?

Presentation
  • We use can to say that that something is possible or allowed or that somebody has the ability to do something.
We use can + infitive (Can do / can see)

The negative is can't (conjunction of can't)

Teachers example to show:
  • We can see the park from our house
  • I don't have a pen
    You can use mine
  • Can you speak any foreign languages
  • The word dream can be a noun or a verb
We can say someone that is able to do somehing, but can is more usual
  • We are able to see the park from our hotel
But can has only two forms:
Can (pesent) and could (past) so sometimes it is neccessary to use (be) able to

Compare:
I can't sleep
VS
I haven't been able to sleep recently

Tome can come tomorrow
VS
Tom might be able to come tomorrow

Maria can speak English and Japanese
VS
Applicatns for the jobs must be able to speak two languages..
