Level: Beginner (Side by Side Book 1)
Method: Presentation Practice Production:
Student will review or be introduced to everyday activity vocabulary and related object vocabulary for the town. The student will then be encouraged to identify various objects and sight words using the samples given, repeating every word in repetition. Finally, The teacher and student will take part in roll-play, using the vocabulary and sentence structures provided with the freedom to identify other items in various other locations and places in town, using the textbook and other inspired vocabulary, time permitting.

Objectives for this lesson:
Students will confidently ask, answer, and report in present continuous tense their daily activities. What are you doing?/ I’m reading./ We’re reading, What is Tom doing? He’s eating" Students will also practice the present continuous tense questions and answers, the student will also practice using proper contractions EX I am, I’m, it is, it’s.
*Students will participate in a fun and engaging role-playing activity.
Materials:
Share-Screen text, slides.
Side by Side Book 1, page 14 (and adapted materials)
Props for role-playing (optional: microphones, hats, sunglasses)
Procedure:
Warm-up (5 minutes):
Briefly discuss the concept of contractions
Practice simple contractions, EX I am, I’m.
Objects & Locations (5 minutes):
Briefly show The model illustrations
Set the scene “neighbors are talking” “The man is eating”
Identification Prep (5 minutes):
Using text, provide a list of 3-5 simple questions and provide the corresponding answers (e.g., "What is the man doing ?" “he’s singing” “What are they doing?” “They’re eating”).
Talk about the difference in non- 3rd person format vs. 2 person.
Interview Time! (10 minutes):
Teacher and student will ask each other what people are doing in the apartment illustration using the sentence structure of the textbook and pictures from the text book, and if props are available, they should be used as well.
Use role-playing props if available to add fun and engagement.
Encourage student(s) to use the target language and answer questions using present tense verbs.
Wrap up and Highlights (5 minutes):
Each pair shares a highlight from the role-playing lesson.
Allow students to ask follow-up questions.
Discuss what they learned about the contractions and present continuous tense vocabulary, and the rules pertaining.
