Lesson Plan: Interview Preparation and Presentation
Grade Level: Intermediate to Advanced ESL students
Duration: 90 minutes
Objectives:
- Students will learn strategies for preparing for job interviews.
- Students will practice answering common interview questions.
- Students will enhance their presentation skills through a mock interview.
Materials:
- Whiteboard and markers
- Handouts with common interview questions and tips
- Sample job descriptions
- Timer (for practice sessions)
- Video recording device (optional, for feedback)
Lesson Outline

Introduction (10 minutes)
- Discuss the importance of interview skills in the job search process.
- Ask students to share any experiences they have had with interviews, good or bad.

Presentation: Interview Preparation (20 minutes)
- Cover key topics:
- Researching the company and role
- Preparing answers to common questions (e.g., "Tell me about yourself," "What are your strengths and weaknesses?")
- The STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for answering behavioral questions.
- Dress code and body language tips.
- Provide handouts summarizing these points.

Common Interview Questions (20 minutes)
- Divide students into pairs and assign each pair a set of common interview questions.
- Each student takes turns answering the questions while the partner provides feedback on clarity, confidence, and body language.

Mock Interviews (30 minutes)
- Set up a mock interview environment. Assign roles: interviewer and candidate.
- Allow each student to conduct a short interview (5-7 minutes) before switching roles.
- Encourage the interviewer to ask follow-up questions and the candidate to apply the STAR method where appropriate.
- If possible, record the interviews for later review.

Group Reflection (5 minutes)
- Regroup and discuss what students learned from the experience. What strategies worked? What challenges did they face?

Closure and Homework (5 minutes)
- Summarize the key points about interview preparation and presentation.
- For homework, ask students to write a reflective piece on their mock interview experience and to prepare answers to two new interview questions.
