Part I
Problem-Solving and Expressing Opinions
Objective:
- To practice spontaneous speaking, expressing opinions, and problem-solving in real-life scenarios
- To develop fluency, vocabulary range, and discourse management
Warm-up Conversation (5 minutes)
- Topic: Recent experiences or news.
- Questions:
- “What’s something interesting you’ve learned this week?”
- “Have you read or watched anything recently that stood out?”
- Focus: vocabulary, grammar, and coherence of idea
PART II
Scenario-based Problem-Solving (10 minutes) Role Play
Activity: Talk about a real-life scenario and find a solution
- Scenario 1: “You are the team leader at work, and your client isn’t satisfied with the project’s outcome. You have to negotiate a compromise and find a solution.”
- Instructions:
- Explain solution in detail
- Present the solution logically, use polite negotiation language, and express ideas clearly as if you are speaking with the client
- Follow-up Questions:
- “How would you handle a disagreement in this situation?”
- “What are some alternative solutions you might suggest?”
- Purpose: Practice quick thinking, using problem-solving vocabulary (e.g., “Perhaps we could…,” “Another option might be…”), and structuring responses
PART III
Opinion Expression and Justification (10 minutes)
Activity: Discuss a thought-provoking question
- Question: “Do you think technology is improving or hurting human relationships?”
- Instructions:
- Explain opinion and provide reasons, support your arguments with examples
- Elaborate on the below questions:
- “Why do you think that’s the case?”
- “Can you provide an example from your experience?”
- Focus: Use of discourse markers (e.g., “Firstly…,” “In contrary…”), persuasive language, and complex sentence structures to build argument
- Purpose: Improve fluency in expressing opinions and strengthen their ability to support their ideas with logical reasoning.
PART IV
Feedback and Reflection (5 minutes)
Activity: Provide targeted feedback based on the learner's performance during the lesson.
- Focus Areas:
- Highlight strengths (e.g., effective use of vocabulary, clarity of expression).
- Provide constructive feedback on areas for improvement (e.g., fluency, pronunciation, specific grammar points).
- Suggest 1–2 ways they can practice independently, like recording themselves or focusing on specific phrases or structures they struggled with.
- Reflection: Ask the learner to reflect on how they felt during the lesson.
- “What do you think went well today?”
- “Is there anything you want to focus on more in the next session?”
Homework Suggestion:
- Task: Watch or listen to a podcast, then prepare to discuss the main ideas in the next session.
- Purpose: Reinforce listening skills and provide material for future speaking practice.
