MiaHuang Tutor Interview

Q. Hi MiaHuang! Thank you for taking the time to do this interview. May we ask you to briefly introduce yourself?

A. Hello! My name is Mia. I am from Taichung, Taiwan. I have a degree in Japanese language, but after I graduation, I worked for a sports gym. I am sure anyone hearing about this for the first time will be quite surprised. I also worked for a year at a gym in Hiroshima, Japan. I think that I am a pretty free-spirited person, as I do things I enjoy doing all the time.

Q. Please tell us more about your hometown and the area where you currently reside.

A. I was born and raised in a small town in Taichung, Taiwan. I lived in Taichung until college, but after graduation, I moved to Taipei because I wanted to live in a city. I still live in Taipei.

Q. What motivated you to become a tutor on Cafetalk?

A. After I quit my job at the gym, I took a Chinese language teacher and Japanese language teacher training course as I love languages. I did all the trainings, but I did not know how and where to start offering lessons. I still wanted to work with people, so an acquaintance of mine introduced me to Cafetalk.

Q. What are you usually up to when you're not teaching on Cafetalk? What are your hobbies and interests?

A. I used to work as a fitness instructor, but I am actually a surprisingly indoor person during my day offs. I have loved watching TV since I was a little child, and once I start watching anime, TV dramas, or movies, I can watch them all day long. I am a total geek girl. lol

When I want to go out for a while, I usually take my computer with me and go to a cafe. Day offs are the best time to relax and unwind!

Q. A lot of students are probably curious about the atmosphere in your lessons. What can a student imagine a lesson with you to be like? What’s your teaching style?

A. I believe that different teaching methods should be used depending on the needs of each student.I try my best to help my students feel that, “learning Chinese is fun, and I want to learn to speak it!”

In any lesson, we will practice conversation. It can be simple everyday conversations, something that interests the student, or we can just talk about something. Some students may be nervous about speaking, but no matter what your current language level is, I will help you feel comfortable speaking in my lessons.

Q. Which lessons would you recommend to your students?

A. I would like to say, “I recommend all of them!,” but it is best to take lessons that are best suited to the student’s needs.

For beginners, I recommend the “Beginner Chinese” lessons, and for intermediate and higher level students, I recommend the “Chatting Lesson” and “Tailor-made Lessons.”In my “Beginner Chinese” lessons, you can learn everything from pronunciation to basic grammar according to the textbook. In my “Chatting Lesson,” any topic is welcome, and you may find words that are not in a textbook. If you make a grammatical mistake, I will write it down and send it to you so that you can review it after the lesson.

Q. Finally, would you like to leave a message for your current and future students?

A. As a Japanese learner myself, I am well aware of the struggles and difficulty of studying a language. I would love to share my learning experience with every one of you. I love Japanese anime and videos so much that I watch the same ones over and over again. That is how I started to learn vocabulary without even realizing it. In other words, I think the most important factor is to study through something that you can continue to enjoy. I would be delighted if I could continue to share about our daily lives and interests with my students as if we were chatting with friends.
