I offer lessons to pre-school children to adults. My name is Mayumi Okunaga, and I am an abacus teacher. I currently teach at an abacus cram school.
I teach how to calculate using the abacus, which can also help with cognitive development by using your left and right brains.
☆ I teach how to enhance your ability to do calculations in your head, so that you can do the four arithmetical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and other mathematic calculations including decimal calculations in this way.For multiplication s such as 567 × 848, we will use a calculation method where only the answer is left on the abacus (ryo-otoshi calculation).
★ For those who already practice abacus in a different method (experienced users), I will teach the normal method of abacus calculation.★ For beginners, I start with a basic system, such as 48 x 4.
You will also be able to do division in your mind. You will be able to do more than just addition and subtraction in this way.
*In lessons for those who are attending school or studying at home (experienced students), I will ask you about the calculation method you are currently using (ryo-oki, kata-otoshi, ryo-otoshi) and offer you lessons using the method you are practising.
I will offer explanations on how to solve questions that you were unsure about in my measurement lessons (examination practice).
I can also offer lessons to those of you who want to change to using the “ryo-otoshi” method of calculation.
“Listening skills = increased your attention towards listening” Read-aloud arithmetic lessons・・abacus calculation
3rd and 4th grade elementary schools maths textbooks typically include ‘abacus learning.’
I have been invited by elementary schools to give abacus lessons on-site.
From 2022 onwards, 9x9 multiplications and two-digit multiplications, will be mentioned in some textbooks “Mathematics I” during the first year of high school for relearning purposes.
In abacus studies, the 9x9 multiplication system can also be memorised by pre-school children.
My lessons are taught one-to-one, so it is easier to understand as I will constantly interact with my students.
My lessons are taught using the “動く黄色い大そろばん (Movable large yellow abacus).”
*Checking your placement~How to use the abacus~Problems that you got lost at or got wrong (explanation using diagrams) Learning from visuals.
The secret to progress is to understand the cause of mistakes = be aware of it.
Please contact me if you are interested in my lessons, whether you want your young child to learn abacus, or if you are an adult.
Lessons are available from anyone to inexperienced to experienced and those who are attending abacus cram school.

We can discuss your preferred date and time together.
【Notice for students living abroad】Due to the time differences, please book at least a day in advance in the Japanese time zone (of the date and time of your choice). This will be in the early morning or evening.
Thank you for your cooperation.
