Kara Bird Tutor Profile

Hello everyone!

My name is Kara. I am a CELTA (Pass A Grade) qualified and experienced English teacher from Melbourne, Australia. Though I graduated from university with a Bachelor of Laws, I’ve discovered over the last ten years of teaching that this is my true passion.

Apart from English, I can also speak Japanese. This is because I lived in Gifu, Japan for three years while working as an ALT. Living in Japan allowed me to explore many of my passions: teaching, meeting new people and learning new languages.

After I returned home to Melbourne, I began teaching adults from many different countries at an English college. I learned a lot from this job; in particular, how to create an effective, student-centred lesson. As a teacher, I enjoy building rapport with students and being creative in lesson planning. I love helping students grow in ability and confidence.

My hobbies include learning languages, running, writing and drawing (I practice every day, though I’m not very good yet!) I also love travelling – I’ve visited Europe, the US and Asia. My favourite destination is, of course, Japan. So far I’ve been to over 30 Japanese prefectures, and hope to return soon to experience more!

My lessons

I believe the best lessons are those which are

  • Practical
  • Clear
  • Student-centred
  • Enjoyable Challenging

My goals on Cafetalk

  • To create a comfortable, friendly atmosphere in each lesson
  • To provide interesting lessons that cover speaking, listening, reading and writing
  • To help build your confidence in speaking English
  • To create lessons that are relevant to you and your interests, abilities and goals
  • To talk with you about my country’s culture and history and learn about yours too!
  • To give helpful feedback and homework so you can continue learning after the lesson ends
I’m looking forward to meeting you!
