Hello! My name is Natalie and I'm from the U.S.  A southerner by birth, I was raised in Atlanta, Georgia, and miss the culture in the south quite a bit. I’ve lived in a number of different places in the U.S., spent time in Israel and England, and look forward to traveling more in the future. I love learning about different cultures and sharing my own with others. Currently, I live in Chicago, Illinois, though the incredibly cold winters have me longing for a warmer location and I dream of moving to an over-the-water bungalow in the Maldives! Living on Lake Michigan is amazing, however, especially in the Spring.

Areas of Expertise

1) Psychology - I have a Ph.D in
Clinical Psychology and this plays a role in everything I do. I have been counseling over the past several years with some adults and children in my area.  It began with a single neighbor who was having difficulty coping with the pandemic. They told someone about me, who told someone, who told someone and well, you get the idea. I've enjoyed this but would like to be able to use my skills to help more people beyond my immediate area

I find that my psychology background gives me lots of extra insight into what’s going on in the world around me. I’ve taught and mentored students in psychology at a number of different Universities and directed the Clinical Masters Program in Psychology at the University of Hartford. Since the beginning of the pandemic, I have worked online with students who were suddenly forced to take classes remotely and needed help managing this.

Because of my academic background, I am also very skilled at helping students get into undergraduate and graduate programs.  I've been on many admissions committees and know what they are looking for and how to achieve it.
I've helped numerous students from this country as well as 23 other countries get into U.S. and British programs.

2) Academic Writing
I’m a freelance writer/editor and have served as a guest editor for 18 different academic journals as well as published more than 60 academic papers and book chapters myself.  I work with students and professionals to help them write better by editing their work with them so that I can explain why I'm making the changes that I am as I go. I also help individuals create high-quality presentations for different settings including work and school and practice with them so that they can do the best job possible.

3) Creative Writing: Fiction, Poetry and Stage Plays - Along with academic writing, I am a creative writer and have published dozens of works of fiction,
poetry, and scenes from a full-length stage play in literary magazines.  I feel this helps me balance the more formal side of my work life. I hold writing groups in person for people in Chicago and online for people elsewhere, working with a variety of prompts and word sprints. I am happy to bring this to Cafetalk where I can work with individuals one on one. I also plan to teach classes about fiction and poetry in the future.

4) Teaching English as a Second Language
I’ve served as a literacy volunteer with children and adolescents to help them learn to read, afterschool programs to help middle school students complete their homework, and have trained to teach ESL classes.  I have been teaching adult and child ESL students since December 1, 2021.

5) Fiber Arts - This started as a hobby but has developed into a side business for me which is an added benefit! One of the things I love making is hand-bound journals with hand-felted covers.  I sell these online and at art festivals. I hope to offer one on one crafting courses in the future.

Teaching Style

My teaching style is student-oriented. I focus on a person's strengths and how they can be used to help someone improve on their weaknesses. I am extremely positive in nature, very laid back and flexible. I always have several ways of teaching or explaining something so if the student can't follow what I'm trying to get across I can change the way I'm presenting it until they can.

Whenever possible I use humor, games, props, demonstrations and other ways to supplement verbal communication. I adjust my way of interacting and instructing to fit the style and needs of the student instead of expecting them to adjust to my way of doing things.

Hobbies

I have a number of diverse hobbies including hiking, white water rafting, jewelry making, rollerblading, camping, and
reading. I love meeting and talking to new people and am looking forward to doing so on Cafetalk!

Other

The only other thing I can think of to say is that I am very artistic, and was on the stage in one role or another from the time I was 3 until I was in my mid 30's. I went to a performing arts high school in Atlanta and danced with the Atlanta ballet until I was 21. I love most types of theater such as plays, ballets, symphonies, and concerts though I've never managed to sit through an opera but would be willing to try it!

                            .      .     .

I’m looking forward to meeting you!

Thank you for taking the time to read my profile and best wishes in your studies! I hope to talk with you soon.

Best,

Natalie
