A Mini-Tour of Mexico City

Matt.Smith

Konnichiwa minna-san. As a little introduction, I decided to give you guys a photo tour of the city I currently live in, Mexico City. Despite the rainy weather, it's a beautiful city. The people are polite and the food is really good. Enjoy the tour. Bienvenidos a la Ciudad de México.

This place is Zócalo, the main plaza. It's kinda like Town Square in New York City. The Mexican flag is right in the middle of it. Not pictured here are the National Palace and the National Cathedral, which are right next to Zócalo.

This is Castillo de Chapultepec, or Chapultepec Castle. It's a history museum in Chapultepec Park.

This is Xochimilco (pronounced Sochimilco). Xochimilco isn't a Spanish word, but a a Nahuatl word, the language of the Aztec Empire, an indegenous civilization that ruled a large part of Central Mexico. It's a canal on the south side of the city and is the last remnents of Lake Texcoco. Before the Spanish conquest, Mexico City was known as Tenochitlan, which was the capital city of the Aztec Empire and at the time of conquest the fourth largest city in the world. Tenochitlan, roughly located where Centro Historico and Zócalo are today, was an island in the middle of Lake Texcoco. Under Spanish rule, Lake Texcoco slowly drained away until the only part left was this canal.

This is El Ángel de la Independencia, or Angel of Independence in English. It's a monument that pays homage to Mexico's independence from Spain. It is located on Avenida Reforma in Zona Rosa.

This is Chapultepec Park in the foreground with the skyline of Zona Rosa in the background. If you look carefully, it's the same exact place of my profile picture.
