Meet My New Puppy!

Kame

Hi everyone! I want to introduce you all to the newest member of my family. He is a present from my fiance for my 30th birthday. He is a puppy dachshund, and his name is Tofu!

Why Tofu?
He isn't white!

My fiance and I chose the name Tofu, because in English, the sound is very cute. He is also shaped like a little soybean when he curls up to go to sleep. Since my fiance and I met eachother in Japan, we liked the idea of a name that sounded Japanese, without being a human name. The other ideas for names we had were Genki, Momo, and Daikon. However, when we got him, the name Tofu seemed like a perfect fit!

Tofu is a very good dog! Here are some of his favorite activities:

  • He loves to go for walks in his bag. He is still very small, so he cannot walk for a long time. But we still take him all around the park, and to different parts of Paris to explore. When he gets tired, he quietly sits down and waits for us to put him in his bag!

  • He loves to sleep!

  • He also loves to cuddle! Even when he is very excited, his favorite thing to do is be held in someone's arms.

Training a new puppy can be a lot of work, but it is very important! Here are some commands we use in English, and what we are working on now!

Tofu now knows the following commands and follows them (most of the time!)
  • "Sit"
  • "Come"
  • "Potty" This was the first command we made sure he understood. We want him to get used to going outside, and so far, he hasn't had many accidents inside. He really understands!
  • "Box" This means to go in his crate for naps.
  • "No" We have to use this a lot since he is a curious puppy! He likes to follow his nose and sometimes he finds things he shouldn't play with, like our socks, or books, or a tshirt.
With each command, we try to make sure it is short (one or 2 syllables) and that it sounds different from other commands he knows. For example, since he already knows the word "box", we don't want to teach him the word "bark". Instead, we will use "speak" since it has a distinctly different sound from other words he knows.

We are using the positive reinforcment method of dog training. This means that we only focus on his good behavior by giving him lots of treats. We use small, soft dog treats and break them into very tiny pieces. At first, Tofu was very afraid of riding on the bike in his bag, and going on the subway. When he was calm, we gave him many treats and told him "good boy!" Now he can ride on a bike and in the subway without making any noise!

If he does something naughty, like chew on socks (he LOVES socks!) we say no, take away the sock, and redirect his attention to his toy. Then we give him a small treat. Now, we are working on learning new tricks, such as "play dead" and to give a handshake.

He enjoys learning, and his a very sweet, loving puppy. I am so glad I found him!

Do you have any pets? How do you train them?
