I think for most Japanese people the above scene is not so special, everywhere in Japan you can see torii gates and cyclists, but for British people it is an iconic Japanese scene. Torii gates are an important and unique part of Japanese culture, so it is easy to understand why foreign visitors are interested in them. But why would something so usual as cyclists be such an interesting thing for British visitors to Japan? Of course, there are cyclists in the UK, but they are usually bicycle enthusiasts. In Japan everyone rides bicycles. Small differences in culture are as interesting as big ones. Britain is a Christian country, therefore because they are so different Japan’s Buddhism and Shintoism are interesting for me. But for both Japanese people and British people drinking tea is very usual, but the differences in tea culture are remarkably interesting. I am an English teacher, but I learn a lot from my student’s about Japan. Likewise, they learn a lot about Britain from me. I think that is wonderful.
ほとんどの日本人にとって上の景色は特別じゃないと思います。日本ではどこでも鳥居と自転車に乗る人を見ることが出来ますが、イギリス人にとっては、象徴的な日本の景色です。鳥居は重要で独特な日本の文化なので、外国人観光客が興味を持つのは簡単に理解できます。しかし、自転車に乗る人のようにありふれた事が、なぜ、日本を訪れるイギリス人にとっては、そんなに興味深いものなのでしょうか？ もちろん、イギリスには自転車に乗る人はいますが、たいていその人たちはサイクリング愛好家です。日本では誰でも自転車に乗ります。文化の小さな違いは、大きなものと同じくらい興味深いです。イギリスはキリスト教国です。したがって、日本の仏教と神道は非常に異なりますので、私にとっては興味深いです。日本人とイギリス人の両方にとって、お茶を飲む事はとても普通な事ですが、お茶の文化の違いは凄く面白いです。私は英語の先生ですが、日本については生徒さんからたくさん学びます。同じように、生徒さんは私からイギリスについてたくさん学びます。私はそれは素晴らしいと思います。
