Journal Writing in English: This Week's Prompt

Kara Bird

When I was learning Japanese, one of the best ways I practiced new vocabulary and grammar was by keeping a journal. Every week, I wrote a page about something interesting that had happened to me, or a topic I was passionate about. Over time, I noticed that both my writing and speaking improved, because I was constantly using the language I had studied.

Each week, I will use my tutor column to give you a journal prompt so that you too can enjoy learning English through writing.

This week's prompt is:
Describe the world 100 years from now.

Here are some questions to help you start:
- How will people live?
- What will people wear?
- What will the weather be like?
- How will people communicate?
- How will people travel?
- What technology will people use?
- Would you like to live in this world? Why or why not?

Here is some useful vocabulary when predicting the future:
- for things that are certain: bound to, sure to, definitely
We are bound to win the game
They are sure to come to the party
      I'll definitely be there!

- for things that are probable: likely to, probably
He's likely to become the president
I'll probably have sushi for dinner

- for things that are possible: might, may, could
She might be in that room
      He may have a cold
      That could be successful!

- for things that are not likely: unlikely, probably won't, definitely won't
      It's unlikely to rain today
We probably won't complete our exam in time
They definitely won't go overseas this year

Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!

Writing a journal is great, and speaking about it is even better. Would you like to practice your pronunciation by hearing your journal read by a native speaker, then reading it out loud? Would you like to practice your speaking skills by answering questions and having a discussion about your journal? If so, I recommend my lesson Journal Writing in English. You can write about anything you want - you are not limited to this journal topic.
