Reading

One of the best ways to relax is to read a book. Some people can do this on their computers; I find it is much easier to turn the pages with a physical book. With a real book, you can sometimes enjoy illustrations too.

English has lots of classic literature to choose from. This can be serious and weighty, like the stories of Charles Dickens, or lighter and fun, with a compelling plot, like Sherlock Holmes or The Wind and the Willows.

The language of old books can be a little different from modern spoken and written English. Learning unfamiliar words tells us about culture in the past. The novels of Jane Austen are full of different words for a carriage, the vehicle pulled by horses. In fact, the kind of carriage which each character has gives us useful social information about that character.

We learn about people's habits, what they ate and different dinner times, where they lived, and what they wore. We can enjoy the development of character, or a good story, or a clever technique of the author too.

By reading old books, we go into a different world. If you would like to try reading an old book or story, then I am pleased to help.
