Christmas in Canada

Weekly Topic: What are you doing for Christmas this year?

Christmas is just around the corner! Do you celebrate Christmas?

In Canada, Christmas is a big family holiday. Shops and restaurants are all closed on Dec 25th, and usually no one has to work on Christmas day!

My mother decorates our whole house with many beautiful Christmas decorations. We also cut a real Christmas tree from a forest nearby my hometown. It only costs $5 CAD to get a permit to cut down a Christmas tree!

We spend Christmas Eve by having a delicious dinner with relatives at home. A typical Christmas dinner has turkey with stuffing and gravy, roast beef, or ham as the main dish. Dessert is usually various kinds of Christmas cookies like gingerbread and shortbread, or Yule log cakes are also popular. I like to make the yule log cake myself, here is the one I made last year!

Since Christmas is a religious holiday, many people go to church on Christmas eve as well for Christmas Mass. When I was a child I was so impatient for the mass to end, since I couldn't wait to go home and sleep so Santa Claus could bring my presents! They say Santa Claus climbs down the chimney to deliver presents, so my sister and I used to leave cookies and milk infront of the fireplace for Santa to eat when he came.

On Christmas morning, me and my family open the presents we bought for each other and spend a relaxing day together! In Canada, usually Christmas season is very cold and there is a lot of snow, so every year is a 'White Christmas'!

However you are celebrating, I hope you have a great holiday season!
