Are you 'quiet quitting' now?

Yishu H.

Hello, and welcome to Speak good English with me, Yishu. have you heard everyone talking about quiet quitting?

It has been talked a lot since the post-covid. It doesn’t mean that people ’re going to leave their job without being noisy. It is about stopping doing extra things at work and just doing the minimum amount you are paid to do.

Let’s listen to some examples to have a better understanding of this new expression, shall we?

  • I’ve decided not to work late any more! I’m quiet quitting and sticking to office hours only.
  • Despite trying to suggest some new ideas and offer to research them, no one seems interested so I’m quiet quitting.
  • It looks like he’s quiet quitting as he never seems to be here after five o’clock!

You' are listening to Speak Good English with Yishu and we are hearing about the expression ‘quiet quitting’ which describes cutting back on the work you do and just doing what is required within defined working hours. So, no more overtime! Or you could also say it’s about not taking work too seriously?

How about your guys? If you are working too hard or feeling burnout these days. maybe today’s phrase is for you? Ok, that's our idiom for today. See you tomorrow and bye for now!

Vocabulary:

  • cutting back (on sth): to spend less, do less, or use less of something:
  • defined: required
  • overtime: time worked in addition to one's normal working hours.
  • feeling burnout: feeling empty and mentally exhausted, and simply don’t have any more energy to devote to a given task, activity or career.
