Participating in the debate club during high school was one of my favorite outdoor pursuits. The debate club provided me with a wonderful opportunity to hone my critical thinking and public speaking abilities while participating in meaningful conversations with my classmates. Every week, we would congregate in front of the school, where we would take turns arguing various points of view on subjects ranging from politics and current affairs to social concerns and popular culture. I can still vividly recall the adrenaline rush I experienced when it was my turn to stand at the podium and present my argument. At debate club, we learned to listen to and take into account opposing ideas in addition to presenting our own opinions. It served as a useful lesson on how to properly disagree and come to an understanding with others. I recall some of our most impassioned arguments, where we would vehemently defend our stances, but in the end, we would shake hands and leave the conversation with a fresh understanding of the other side's viewpoint. We discussed a wide range of subjects in our lively conversations, from politics and social issues to science and philosophy. We gained knowledge on how to develop a convincing argument, gather and present evidence, and pay attention to and engage with opposing viewpoints. We also gained confidence and speaking skills because we had to present our cases in front of a live audience that included judges, other debators, and onlookers. The tournaments, though, were the most exciting aspect of the debate club. We visited other colleges and secondary schools, where we met other teams and had passionate discussions. As we competed against some of the top debaters in the area, the atmosphere was electrifying. Although the competition was strong, it was also pleasant and encouraging as we supported one another and rejoiced in our victories. I learned useful skills from the debate club—critical thinking, research, public speaking, and persuasion—that I still employ now. It also helped me meet a wide range of individuals who enjoyed learning and debating as much as I did. Through the club, I formed relationships and lifelong friendships, and I will always treasure the memories of those sunny afternoons spent debating outside. Finally, I would like to state that the debate club was not only my favorite outdoor activity in high school but also a life-changing event that influenced my intellectual and social growth. I strongly advise joining a debate club if you're seeking for an exciting and demanding outdoor activity that will help you develop and build relationships.
