"It's a Southern Thing"

Weekly Topic: What made you laugh hard most recently?

Laura P

Recently, my younger brother moved to Texas, which is part of the southern United States or "the South." The South is known to have unique culture, accents and dialects, and since my brother moved there, I wanted to know more about the South.

Some of my favorite information sources I've discovered about living in the South are two YouTube channels: It's a Southern Thing and Matt Mitchell. Both channels make comedy skits about Southern life and language, and even though I didn't grow up in the South, these videos make me laugh.

One video was about how people in the South gave directions, and a character from Texas said that it would take about seven hours to go from one place to the other (because Texas is huge). I had to laugh at that because my parents and I once took a road trip to visit my brother that took 36 hours. 12 of those hours were required to drive through Texas.

I also love the videos about language in the South because I've learned so many new expressions. I'm also amazed that words I know can have different meanings in the South. For example, I always thought "a couple" meant "two," but apparently that's not the case in the South.

I think it's great that comedy can be a way to learn something new, and I want to show my brother these YouTube channels next time I visit him.

If you're curious about what life is like in different regions of the US, let's talk about it!
