NEW LESSON: Debate Club! Improve your critical thinking!

Laurin N.

Do you like to talk about different topics? Do you want to expand your perspectives and explore a topic deeply? Or are you able to see several sides of the same issue? Or do you like to analyse a topic from different angles? Then keep reading this!

"It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating it."Joseph Joubert

Nothing is completely black and white, because life is complex, full of shades and diversity. There are many perspectives, ideas to explore. Any topic is like an iceberg that’s waiting to be discovered.

What's a debate?

A debate is a formal discussion or argument in which individuals present opposing and supporting viewpoints on a specific topic or issue. It involves the exchange of ideas, evidence, and logical reasoning in order to reach a conclusion. The goal of a debate is to present persuasive arguments, challenge opposing perspectives, and ultimately enhance understanding and critical thinking.

How does the lesson work?

I have a list of topic that I will share with the student. I will send the list to the student before the lesson, so they have to choose and tell me their preferences. Also, they have to choose a role: opposing or supporting.
The lesson lasts 30 minues so we can explore 2-3 topics depending on the time we have, but I think 2 topics in 30 minutes might be enough.

We can explore both serious and amusing topics, so you can tell me your preferences but you will find any option in the list of topics I will send you.

The main purpose of the lesson is to explore the arguments, so it's not about personal opinions since you can also take a role you usually would oppose. You could also play Devil's advocate, which means to take a contrary or opposing position during a discussion, even if you do not personally agree with that viewpoint.

You could prepare your arguments in advance, before the lesson, or be spontaneous. It is still a game, so take it this way!

At the end of the debate, we'll reach a common point, or you could tell me your real opinions about it.

You can also take a trial lesson and just try!

I'm waiting for you! See you soon!
