Tim Hortons turns 60!

Zach McLaughlin

Tim Hortons is a cafe chain that can be found across Canada and also in 12 other countries worldwide. It is one of the most iconic Canadian brands and this year is its 60th anniversary. Tim Hortons (often just called “Tims” or “Timmies” in Canada) is named after its founder, Tim Horton, who was a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs NHL team. The first location opened in Hamilton, Ontario in 1964, selling donuts and coffee, but Tim Horton (the founder) tragically died in a car accident just 10 years later. Since then, the menu has expanded significantly, as has the number of locations in Canada and around the world, but Tims is still known for its affordable coffee and donuts (a large coffee is just over $2 these days), and it’s also known for one other thing, too - the term “double-double,” which means “a coffee with two creams and two sugars” (this term is even in the dictionary now!). If you’d like to know more about Tim Hortons, you can check out this news article with Tim Hortons’ timeline. And if you visit Canada, be sure to give Tims a try if you’re looking for a cheaper alternative to Starbucks!

Note: Did you feel weird reading “two creams and two sugars”? “Cream” and “sugar” are both uncountable nouns in English, so adding “s” to them is ungrammatical, but we often do it! At a cafe, you may be asked how many “milks,” “creams,” or “sugars” you want in your drink. “One sugar” means “one small package of sugar.” So, even though it’s not correct grammatically, it’s a common short form.
