Chavs: The Nameless Subculture (B1 / B2 level reading)

Navid.

A subculture is a group within a larger culture that has different values, behaviors, and interests. In a 1979 book titled “Subculture: The Meaning of Style”,  Sociologist Dick Hebdige studies Britain’s post-war subcultures’ fashion and style as symbolic forms of resistance. He defines a subculture as "a set of shared practices and beliefs that are distinct from, but related to, the broader culture." Subcultures often form in response to societal norms and provide their members with a sense of identity and belonging. For example, the punk subculture in the 1970s had anti-establishment music, ripped clothing, safety pins, and unique slang.

The term "chav" is a negative word used to describe a youth subculture in Britain. This subculture is known for its specific fashion choices, music preferences, and social behaviors. What makes the "Chav" subculture unique is that the members have never created or used a specific word to refer to themselves. The word “chav” has mainly been used by mainstream culture to refer to them. This makes “chavs” an unusually organic social group. They have their own style, language, and cultural practices, setting them apart from mainstream society.

The origins of the word “chav” are unclear; some theories suggest it comes from the Romani word "chavi," meaning "child." The Romani people are an ethnic group with origins in northern India, who migrated to Europe around 1,500 years ago. They have their own distinct language and culture but have historically faced discrimination and marginalization across Europe. Another theory is that the term "chav" originates from the town of Chatham in Kent, where it was used to describe a particular youth behavior and fashion.

Fashion is important in the "chav" subculture. Typical clothing includes tracksuits, hoodies, baseball caps, and branded trainers from brands like Adidas, Nike, and Burberry. Large, flashy jewelry, such as gold chains and hoop earrings , is also common.

Music genres like grime, UK garage, and hip-hop are popular among the inhabitants of the subculture. Artists such as Stormzy, Skepta, and Dizzee Rascal are especially influential. Their music reflects urban life's realities, with themes of struggle, resilience and defiance. This music shapes the subculture's identity and influences their fashion, language, and social interactions.

Language is another  key to understanding subcultures. Common “chav” slang includes "innit" (isn't it), "bruv" (brother), and "bare" (a lot). This slang shows their working-class roots and acts as a badge of identity. It helps communication within the group and sets them apart from outsiders. The slang is dynamic, constantly changing to include new expressions and trends.

The "chav" subculture, often misunderstood, holds rich cultural elements. Despite the negative connotations of the word "chav", and lack of a self-coined label, this subculture has a unique blend of fashion, music, and language. Understanding subcultures like the "chavs" helps us appreciate the diverse nature of society, challenging preconceptions and highlighting the contrast between different social realities. This exploration shows the richness of subcultures and their contributions to the broader cultural landscape.
