Delicious!

Hello! I am a Japanese language tutor, Muu.. I'm going to write about this week's topic, "The happiest compliment I've ever received."

It is "Delicious". So simple!

About 10 years ago, my family and I lived in Tennessee, USA. Living abroad for the first time was a series of surprises. For example, I was excited even in a supermarket to see big packs of meat or vegetables I had never seen before.

One day, my family invited one of my husband's co-workers, Satoshi to dinner. He was a Japanese who had lived alone in the United States for decades. I rarely cook meals for anyone other than my family, so I was nervous and I wondered what to cook. After thinking about it, I decided to make some Japanese dishes.

I cooked Yakitori:Japanese chicken skewers, Chirashi-zushi:vinegared rice topped with assorted ingredients, Japanese Curry, Japanese dumplings, etc. on the day Shatoshi came.

I'm not very good at cooking, and I managed to make them with limited ingredients available in the United States.

However, Satoshi ate them and quietly said, "These are delicious" and "They touched my heart."

I imagined the decades Satoshi had spent since he left Japan, and I was really glad that he was happy to eat Japanese food I cooked. Also, I realized again that it was very happy to be said "Your meal is delicious"

What is the happiest compliment you've ever been said?

今回は、今週のトピック「今までで一番嬉しかった褒め言葉」について書こうと思います。

それは「おいしい」です。すごくシンプルですね!

私は10年ほど前、家族でアメリカ・テネシー州に住んでいました。初めての海外生活は驚きの連続で、スーパーに行くだけでも、肉のパックが大きかったり、見たことのない野菜があったりで、ワクワクしていました。

そんなある日、夫の仕事関係のサトシさんを、夕食に招待することになりました。サトシさんは日本人ですが、日本を離れて何十年、アメリカで一人暮らしの方でした。

私は家族以外に食事をつくることはほとんどないので、緊張して、何を作ろうかと悩みました。そして考えた末、日本食を作ることにしました。

当日のテーブルには、焼き鳥、ちらしずし、カレー、餃子などが並びました。私は料理が特別上手なわけではなく、アメリカで手に入る材料で、なんとか作った料理でした。

しかし、それを食べたサトシさんは、静かにしみじみと「おいしい」「心に沁みます」と言ってくださいました。

私は日本を離れてからのサトシさんの数十年を想像して、喜んでもらえて本当に良かったと思いました。そして料理をおいしいと言われることは、あらためて、とても嬉しいことだと思いました。
