7 years Of Tutoring And The Lessons I Have Learnt

MJay

After 7 years of teaching English and around 12 000 hours of lessons conducted, what lessons have I learnt from teaching English you may ask. Well as an educator I now consider myself as playing the role of both student and teacher. Every lesson I give adds to my experience. Education has always been a two way street. And I hadn't realised this until probably 3 years into my vocation. Before that, every lesson seemed like the previous one. A sense of monotony had snuck in and I was honestly struggling with depression because of it.

One fine morning, after one of my jogs, I had an epiphany.
I was looking at things all wrong, I was acting as if I hadn't benefited from teaching. I noticed how much more articulate I had become at explaining and giving great examples when students asked me questions. This trickled down into my personal relationships, I communicated better with my family, I became more accurate with my use of English because of constantly helping my students when they erred, I had  become like a task master of my own tongue, whipping it into grammatical submission ensuring only the best sentences were uttered by my lips.

I had way more confidence in expressing myself, I mean that can happen if you have to meet and introduce yourself to a new student on a daily basis.

Teaching has taught me that no amount of effort that you put out in the world will come back to you without interest.
There is value in consistency.

And as for you, who feels like their journey of learning English is tedious and unrewarding. All I have to say is give it time, as long as you are consistent and willing to put in the effort, especially on days you don't feel like it, you will hit your goals, your English will improve and you will be as surprised as I was at realising just how much value you can get from being consistent.
