What I loved about backpacking Thailand

Carmen Franchini

Backpacking in Thailand was one of the most memorable and enjoyable experiences of my life. As a solo female traveler, I was amazed by how safe I felt throughout my entire trip. The only time I felt a little uncomfortable was during a brief encounter with two tourists, but that was an exception (note how they were tourists and not locals). Everywhere I went, I felt a sense of security and ease, which made the experience even more special.

One of the things that truly stood out to me was how incredibly kind and helpful the local people were. Even in moments when I was struggling with directions or navigating with Google Maps, I didn’t even have to ask for help. The locals would notice and approach me with a warm smile, offering directions or advice before I had the chance to ask. It was so heartwarming to see their willingness to help, and it made me feel welcomed and cared for. Their positive energy and friendliness created such a relaxed and inviting atmosphere, no matter where I was. Along the way, I even made a lot of Thai friends, which made the trip even more meaningful.

Aside from the wonderful people, I absolutely fell in love with the food! Thai cuisine is known for its incredible flavors, and I was lucky enough to try so many delicious dishes during my journey. One of my favorites was pad thai: the mix of sweet, sour, and savory flavors was just perfect, and I could never get enough of it. But the real highlight for me was khao soi, a rich and creamy coconut-based curry soup with tender noodles and crispy fried ones on top. The combination of textures and flavors was absolutely delicious, especially in the northern part of the country, where it’s a specialty.

And while the cities were exciting, I really enjoyed exploring the countryside life too. It was so peaceful and beautiful, with a slower pace that allowed me to truly relax and appreciate the natural beauty around me. The simplicity of life there, combined with the friendliness of the people, made the countryside just as special as the more bustling parts of Thailand.

The combination of feeling safe, the kindness of the locals, the amazing food, and the chance to experience both city and countryside life made my trip to Thailand truly unforgettable. It’s a country that offers so much to travelers, and I would go back in a heartbeat!
