文法の投稿シリーズ26 - im Gegenteil / On the contrary / 却って

Dietz

When we are in the situation to describe an unexpected result, sometimes opposite to what was intended or expected, we use in English grammar patterns like "on the contrary" or "instead".
"I wanted to help, but on the contrary, I was rejected."
"I took the medicine, but it made me feel worse instead."

薬を飲んだが、却って気分が悪くなった。

In German, we use grammar patterns like "im Gegenteil" oder "stattdessen".
"Ich habe das Medikament genommen, aber im Gegenteil, mir wurde schlechter."
