English Literature
Description
When you first meet someone and they want to ‘break the ice’, do you look around to see where the ice cubes are?
Have you ever been on a ‘wild goose chase’, looking for something in a place it never was?
Have you been confused in political discussions when people describe situations as ‘Orwellian’ or say ‘this is just 1984!’
When you get very interested in something and spend a lot of time and energy researching it, do you wonder why people say you have ‘gone down a rabbit hole’?
All of these expressions in the English language, and many more, come from different works of literature which have influenced English-speaking culture throughout history.
Come and join me to discuss some famous authors, poets and playwrights from British history. Probably you have heard of William Shakespeare but did you know that he probably invented around 1,700 words? And ‘Shakespeare phrases’ are still in use in everyday English to this day?
Maybe you have seen ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and are interested in learning more about Tolkien and his world? Would you like to learn about the life and art of the visionary poet William Blake? Or perhaps you are curious about the political commentaries made by George Orwell in ‘Animal Farm’ or ‘1984’?
These are just examples of authors and works we can look at, if you interested in a particular author or book I am happy to read it with you.
