Description
This is a 4-class exploration of British culture and values.
Are you planning a trip to the UK and want to know more than just the normal tourist activities?
Do you live in Britain or are are planning to move there, and want to understand British life?
Do you want to improve your British English, work on your pronuncation, learn Britsh idioms and understand British literature, music and films?
Or are you simply curious about the British lifstyle?
If you said 'yes' to any of these, then this lesson pack is for you. My name is Charlotte and I grew up in London, in the UK. I have a deep knowledge of traditional (pre-Christian) British culture and of British literature. I have lived outside of the UK for over 10 years and so I am good at explaining British culture and language to outsiders.
Come and join me to explore!
- Class 1: Introduction
We talk about your experiences with Britain, your current knowledge level and what you are interested in learing more about.
- Class 2: British Culture and Values
We explore some aspects of British culture and values such as Democracy, Freedom of Expression, Politeness and Rule of Law. We discuss how these values are expressed in behaviour and similarities and differences between values of your own culture.
- Class 3: British Nature
In this class we learn about the importance of trees in British culture, and the traditional 'sacred trees' of ancient Britain. We explore people's relationship to the natural world in modern-day UK, and look at examples of working with nature such as Kew Gardens and the Eden Project. We also discuss which trees are important in your culture and what you think about them.
- Class 4: British Celebrations
In this class, we look at the 'Wheel of the Year' and the 8 celebrations of this ancient British calendar, which are still celebrated today. We also look at the important Christian celebrations in the UK, and important dates such as Bonfire Night.
At the end of the class, there will be time to go over everything we have already looked at from the previous classes, for me to check your progress and for you to ask any questions.
