For domestic students applying to graduate schools in the U.S. there are little known tactics that can help them get accepted.  For foreign students there are extra steps that need to be focused on.

International students applying for graduate school in the United States often feel overwhelmed. While guidelines are provided by each school, there are many strategies that can greatly improve your chances of getting accepted if you are a foreigh student.  The best way to learn about these little known tactics is to work with someone who not only successfully completed a U.S. graduate program, but who also served on graduate school admissions committes as well.

These lessons will be individualized for each specific student based on how soon they will be applying, their background, and their English speaking and writing skills levels. There are many potential areas that could be covered based on the needs of the student. Some of these include:
  • What are graduate schools in the U.S. looking for?
  • Choosing which programs to apply to
  • Vita development and/or review (in session)
  • Vita editing (done in session with the student)
  • What should be included in the admissions essay?
  • Development of basic template for admissions essays
  • Review and editing of essays (done in session with the student)
  • Developing a research area to include as part of your essay or application (if required)
  • How to appear to be a good match for a program and faculty interests
  • Where to find out additional information about specific schools from current students and applicants
  • Applying for program/university funding
  • How to find external sources of funding
  • How to handle correspondance
  • What interview questions might be asked?
  • Mock interview practive
  • How to handle multiple offers
  • How to choose among multiple offers
  • The importance of community for international students
  • Coping with anxiety during the process of applying
The first session will focus on student goals for applying to grad school and the future, academic background, and an assessment of the students strengths and weaker areas Questions will be addressed.  An initial plan for where to start will be developed.

The graduate school application process can be lengthy and students are encouraged to begin preparing to apply as early as possible.
