Copies of selected Shakespearean sonnets
Handout on the structure of a sonnet
Audio or video recording of Shakespearean sonnets being recited
Procedure:
Introduction:
Begin by discussing whatthe students already know about William Shakespeare and his works, including his sonnets.
Define what a sonnet is and discuss the characteristics of a Shakespearean sonnet (14 lines, iambic pentameter, rhyme scheme).
Play an audio or video recording of a Shakespearean sonnet being recited and ask students to share their initial reactions.
Activity 1 - Analyzing Sonnet Structure:
Distribute handouts on the structure of a sonnet and have students identify the characteristics of a Shakespearean sonnet.
Using a chart paper, model the rhyme scheme and meter of a Shakespearean sonnet.
Have students to analyze the structure of a Shakespearean sonnet, identifying the rhyme scheme and meter.
Activity 2 - Analyzing Sonnet Language and Themes:
Distribute copies of selected Shakespearean sonnets and ask the student to read them silently to themselves.
Model how to annotate and mark up a poem by identifying and highlighting key words and phrases.
Have students work to annotate and analyze the language and themes of their assigned sonnet.
Ask students to share their findings with me.
Activity 3 - Writing Sonnets:
Discuss the challenge of writing a sonnet and explain how to use the sonnet structure handout to guide their writing.
Have students work on their own to write their own Shakespearean sonnet, focusing on a theme or topic of their choice.
Provide feedback and guidance as they work through the writing process.
Conclusion:
Recap the main characteristics of a Shakespearean sonnet and the themes explored in the sonnets.
Have students share their own sonnets with me and discuss the writing process.
Discuss the relevance and continued popularity of Shakespeare's sonnets.
Assessment:
Evaluate students' understanding of the structure, language, and themes of Shakespearean sonnets through their participation in the activities and their own sonnet writing.
