Kaho Tutor Interview

Q. Hi Kaho! Thank you for taking the time to do this interview. May we ask you to briefly introduce yourself?

A. Hello! I am Kaho, and I work as a flute instructor.
I started playing the flute when I was 12 years old because I admired my aunt who was a flutist. I have also been learning piano since I was 4 years old and have spent most of my life surrounded by music.

Q. Please tell us more about your hometown and the area where you currently reside.

A. I grew up in an area rich in nature, surrounded by mountains and rivers. There are rows of cherry and plum trees in my neighborhood, so I look forward to spring every year. Getting to see baby ducklings is also one of my biggest delights every year.

Q. What motivated you to become a tutor on Cafetalk?

A. I have students who come to my lessons from far away, as well as students who are taking care of their parents. “I'm afraid to drive in the winter because of the snow…”, “I’m afraid of exposing my parents to covid…” I decided to offer online lessons after hearing these comments from students.

Q. What are you usually up to when you're not teaching on Cafetalk? What are your hobbies and interests?

A. I usually stay at home with my cat. I enjoy gardening. I enjoy discussing and exchanging information with my students who also enjoy gardening. I also like to watch YouTube or browse Instagram. I often watch content related to gardening, animals, and K-POP. I often watch about dogs, cats, felines, red pandas, and wild birds.

I have always loved K-POP since I was in high school and I especially like Girls’ Generation, SHINee, Red Velvet, NCT, aespa, LE SSERAFIM and NewJeans.I am very much an indoor person so I seldom go somewhere.
Of course I practice hard too!!!

Q. A lot of students are probably curious about the atmosphere in your lessons. What can a student imagine a lesson with you to be like? What’s your teaching style?

A. I will specify instructional books for first-time students in both my flute course and introductory flute instrument course. Does an instructional book sound boring to you? I try to make it as enjoyable as possible to play, by choosing one that has a lot of tunes in it. For those who have experience in flute, I will most likely ask you at the beginning of the course if you would like me to specify a song for you to practice, or if you would like to choose your own song. Practice is not always fun, but I always try to make it as enjoyable as possible.

Q. Which lessons would you recommend to your students?

A. I recommend my introductory flute instrument course.
“I want to start playing the flute, but it seems like such a hard thing to do...”
There are probably many of you who think this way. I offer introductory lessons for flute instruments such as the fife, which can be purchased for about 1,200 yen, or the TooT which can easily be played like a recorder with an assisting feature. I also use free downloadable instructional books in my introductory flute lessons to make it easy for students who are just starting to learn.

Q. Finally, would you like to leave a message for your current and future students?

A. To my current students, thank you so much for always taking my lessons!
I still have a lot to learn, but I will continue to strive to be a good instructor.

To my future students, practicing an instrument is not all fun and games.
At times, I am sure you will face challenges, but I will do my best to support you in those situations.
Let’s enjoy playing the flute together!
