Profilo di Ian O
Hello! My name is Ian O., and I have been teaching philosophy, humanities, and academic writing at colleges and universities in the United States for twenty years. I love teaching, and I'm endlessly interested in the complexities of language and life. After all, one of the 20th century's most important philosophers, Ludwig Wittgenstein, said that "the limits of your language are the limits of your world."
I spent many years as a student. I have a Ph.D. in the philosophy of cognitive science from the University of Iowa, an M.A. in the philosophy of logic from the University of Idaho, and a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Minnesota. I am also a writer and researcher, having published academic journal articles and book chapters on learning, education, memory, science, and ancient philosophy.
My students tell me that my teaching style is casual, intellectual, and welcoming. They also repeatedly comment that I am excellent at making complex concepts and topics easy to grasp, and excellent at helping them
want to learn, and to really understand things. I always enjoy talking through interesting material with students, at any level.
When I'm not teaching, I like reading literature and philosophy, writing fiction, playing go, composing music, and foraging mushrooms out here in the rainforests outside of Portland, Oregon. I also love traveling, and tend to find myself wandering ruins and mountainsides in faraway lands as often as I can manage.
