Meatless Burger

Apr 16, 2021

Meatless burger, or veggie burgers, have become a trend.  There are several companies that manufacture meatless burgers, meatless ground meat and meatless sausages.  My favourite is Beyond Meat.

However, are these meatless meat really good for health?  It depends if you are talking about your personal health or the health of the planet.

Lowering the consumption of meat means reducing animal farming, which is good for the planet.
Factory made meatless, or veggie burgers are higher in fat and sodium compared to ground meat.

Let's compare 4 oz of ground meat, and meatless burgers from Impossible and Beyond Meat.

85 % Lean ground beef240 calories17g fat6g saturated fat80mg sodium (before seasoning)

Impossible meat240 calories14g fat8g saturated fat370mg sodium

Beyond Burger250 calories18g fat6g saturated fat390mg sodium

In terms of nutrition, real meat seems to be a better choice, compared to the store bought vegetarian options.

However, you can make your own meatless burgers using beans, vegetables, flax seeds and tofu.

Tonight, I made meatless burger from Beyond Meat.  It tastes better than ground beef.
