The Forgotten Dream

Weekly Topic: What did you want to become when you were a kid?

Shezel

The kids my age before had grand dreams. One of my classmates wanted to be a pilot, my best friend dreamt of becoming a doctor and my cousin aspired to become a policeman.  When all else wanted to become a somebody, I just wanted to be married.

My parents burst into laughter when  I said "When I grow up I want to get married". They thought the idea was cute for I was just four or five years old, so they never had the heart to correct me. The innocent mind of a child couldn't comprehend such concept of occupation. What I had in mind was that just like my mom, I also wanted to have a family. That was why we always had pretend plays and I would be a mother cooking something and serving meals to the kids.

Looking back, I enjoy doing household chores such as washing clothes, doing the dishes, cleaning the house and helping my mom in the kitchen.  For quite a while that was what I liked to do. Probably most little girls love those stuff till I went to grade school.

In there, we began to read many inspiring success stories of people. We watched lots of movies and understood life, met numerous kinds of individuals and respect many of them. That was where I started to admire someone and dreamt of becoming like that person. Along the way of learning,  I encountered various types of competent professionals and skillful workers, so I got curious in so many fields of interests.

For the past years, I was very busy chasing my dreams. I got so preoccupied that I've forgotten the very first dream I had. Now that women my age have gotten married and have three kids, my mother reminded me of that dream I declared when I was young. Now it's my turn to laugh for I realized that being married is not a dream to attain but a choice to make.
