When will be "that day"?

Yishu H.

Hello, and welcome to Speak good English with me, Yishu. Still, today is our “new phrase day”. Let me ask you this. Which expression will you use when you don’t think something will happen? “Impossible?” Yes, that’s right. But today we’ll talk about an idiom that has the same meaning.

What’s that? It’s “that’ll be the day”. We use this expression to say that we think something is unlikely to happen.

Let’s hear some examples to have a better understanding.

  • He said he was finally going to apologize! That’ll be the day!
  • You think you’re going to beat me at Monopoly? You never have and never will! That’ll be the day!
  • I’m not speaking to her because she forgot my birthday again! That’ll be the day when she actually remembers!

You’re listening to Speak good English with Yishu, and we’re talking about the expression ‘that’ll be the day’. We use this expression to say that we don’t believe something is likely or will happen.

Ok, that's our piece of authentic English for today. See you soon. Bye bye~
