How will AI affect language learning in the future?

Two years ago, during my Master’s degree program, I took a course on technology in language learning. At that time, we were still in the middle of the Covid pandemic, and most things were still being done online (in fact, about 90% of my classes were online at that time!). Digital tools had advanced rapidly, and a lot of new tools for language learning had emerged. We were all wondering how this would affect language learning and teaching after the pandemic, and I wrote one of my papers on this topic, specifically why “machines” won’t replace teachers. At that time, I was fairly confident that I would still have a job as a language teacher for many years to come.

However, when ChatGPT came out at the beginning of this year, everything changed. The general public realized for the first time how advanced AI had become, and throughout 2023 it has become clear that it will change every industry in a major way, including language education. Of course, this makes a lot of teachers (not just language teachers) nervous, but it has also been a very interesting topic for me to discuss with my students and colleagues this year. Everyone is trying to guess what can and can’t be done by AI and what the “human” role will be in language education in the future. Very recently, one of my favourite language learning YouTubers (Paul from LangFocus) released a video on this topic, in which he shares his opinions about how AI may change the way we learn and use languages in the near future, as well as why he thinks people will still continue to learn languages instead of just depending on AI to communicate.
