The iCAN's of FATHERING

Iain Shippey

The National Center for Fathering developed the iCANs of Fathering as a framework to help fathers engage positively and consistently in their children's lives. The four core iCANs represent foundational principles that fathers can focus on to support their children's well-being. They are:

1. Involvement

Fathers should be actively present in their children's lives. This involves showing interest in their activities, spending quality time together, and being available emotionally and physically.

2. Consistency

Being reliable and dependable is essential in a father-child relationship. Consistency helps build trust and stability, letting children feel secure and supported.

3. Awareness

Fathers should be aware of their children’s needs, interests, and feelings. This requires paying attention to changes, challenges, and achievements in their children’s lives and responding appropriately.

4. Nurturance

Providing love, encouragement, and emotional support is crucial. Nurturing involves creating a safe, caring environment that fosters self-confidence and resilience in children.

These iCANs serve as a practical guide for fathers to develop meaningful connections with their children, offering a structured way to enhance their parenting and foster their children's growth.
