ENGLISH TONGUE TWISTERS - LET'S PRACTICE!

Nona Bungay

A tongue twister is a sentence or expression which is very difficult to say properly especially when you try to say it quickly.

Tongue twisters are a great way to practice and improve pronunciation and fluency.  They can also help to improve accents by using alliteration, which is the repetition of one sound. They're not just for kids, but also used by actors, politicians and public speakers who want to sound clear when speaking.  Below you will find some of the most popular English tongue twisters.  Say them as quickly as you can.  If you can master them, you will be a much more confident speaker.

1.  Betty bought a bar of butter, but the butter Betty bought was bitter, so Betty beat a bit of butter to make the bitter butter better.

2.  Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.  If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, where's the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?

3.  She sells seashells by the seashore. If she sells seashells by the shore, where are the seashells she sells by the seashore?

4.  I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream.

5.  Top chopsticks shop stock top chopsticks.

6.  Chester chooses chestnuts, cheddar cheese with chewey chives.

7.  A big black bear bit a big black bug and the big black bug bled black blood.

8.  Thirty-three thieves thought that they thrilled the throne throughout Thursday.

9.  While we were walking, we were watching window washers wash Washington's windows with warm washing water.

10. Mr. Tongue Twister tried to train his tongue to twist and turn, to twit and twat, to learn the letter "T."
