Have you ever wondered what life for an American is like? My experience spans 60 years of my country's history and culture. Let's chat about it!
Kursinhalt
I was born in the Midwest of America, which is also known as the 'heartland' because the landscape of my part of the United States is known to have back roads to less important cities and places. Think of John Denver's song 'Country Roads' to get an image.
Then imagine my life in this green and uncomplicated part of the USA in the 1960's (Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy, women's rights' demonstrations, gay rights' movement, first man lands on the moon), 1970's (Vietnam War, President Richard Nixon's crimes), and 1980's (first personal computers, AIDS epidemic, stock mareket crash of '87, fall of the Berlin Wall).
I left America in the 1990's, but I have remained very American wherever I lived until today. My knowledge of the American perspective is based on my mother-tongue and the yearly trips home to see family and friends. Americans are quite self-centered, so on those trips I usually had to live in their worlds in and try to understand their perspectives during the following decades: the birth of the Internet, the collapse of the Soviet Union, LA riots, the birth of terrorism, climate change issues, school shootings, September 11 attacks, many US wars, the first Black American president, Black Lives Matter movement, gender issues discussions, etc.
If there's any decade or event you are particularly interested in discussing, you can let me know and I will prepare facts and points for us to dive into. But I am also happy to share my experiences with you and to hear your opinions on how those world events affected you or how you understand them.
