                                     Lesson: Fun Debate

1. Lesson background:


  • Target: This lesson is great for intermediate to advanced level English learners. High school students to adults will find this lesson most enjoyable.
  • Topic: Debate-style conversation about everyday topics like: Would you rather drive a big car or a small car, and why?
  • Outcome/s: This lesson has many opportunities for practicing English speaking and critical thinking in English, as well as learning new vocabulary phrases. This lesson also encourages independent thought.
  • This lesson can be taken multiple times, as there are many different debate topics available, and we can build on your debate skills each time.
  • Lesson duration: 35 minutes.
 

2. Lesson layout:

  • Introduction: First off, we will exchange basic greetings to get to know one another better or just to catch up.
  • Main activity: Here, I will present a debate topic and, after some time to think, we will discuss your thoughts and opinions. As you speak, I will provide feedback, and you will practice communicating your thoughts and opinions naturally in English. After you have finished, I will present my own opinion and ask for your feedback. We will practice how to give appropriate feedback in debate-style conversations.
  • Conclusion: You can choose a final debate topic, and we will practice having a spontaneous conversation about it using the skills learned in this lesson.
