Restarting your English Engine

Being stuck as an intermediate learner isn't easy and it often feels like you're not improving. Don't worry I understand what you're going through and I'd like to help.

Introduction - This is the perfect chance for us to have a relaxed discussion about how you have learnt English in the past. Is there anything you would like to focus on particularly? What are you finding difficult: reading, writing, speaking, listening?? (5-10 mins approx)

Depending on what you have told me during the introduction, we will begin by focussing on the part of English you find most difficult. I will have a range of exercises to get your brain back into gear and would like to reignite your enjoyment in learning the language.

During the remaining 45-50 minutes we will concentrate on at least two parts of English learning: reading, writing, speaking or listening. If you choose to continue taking these classes we will change these each lesson, depending on what you would like to focus on.

I want you to choose what you would like to improve and I am here to advise you. There are a number of methods, which will be used in our classes.

- Speaking: dialogues, studying phrases and idioms, the importance of collocations (words that have to be put in a certain order) and phrasal verbs. We will have conversations about any topics, where you feel your vocabulary could be better.

-Writing: learn how to improve your written English to use in everyday life situations - emails, WhatsApp messages, social media updates, formal and informal writing. If you're feeling brave we can also try some creative writing.

- Reading: we will read either non-fiction or fictional texts that cover a subject or story that you are interested in. Let's take a part of the text and go over the meaning and pick out any phrases you are unsure of. I will ask you some questions at the end to see what you have understood. If you prefer, we can also look at any English songs you would like to understand better.

- Listening: songs, radio, speeches, dialogues. Listening is so important in any language and being able to pick out as many parts of a conversation is a key in becoming fluent. We will start by listening to slower, more simple conversations and pick out any words you do not understand. In addition, we will be studying different accents from the English speaking world and the different words these dialects will use. As your understanding improves, we will start listening to more difficult dialogues.

Let's get you off the intermediate plateau and start helping you to feel comfortable speaking English with native speakers. I hope this will help you to feel confident to travel, work or simply engage with English in the future.
