In this course, you will be introduced to the philosophy of science in the 17th century. Alchemy proved to be an essential aspect of the scientific revolution (later to be replaced with chemistry). We will survey the philosophical development of matter theory in light of early modern embryology. In doing so, we will read Aristotle and Aristotelian predecessors’ views on generation of animals and how the soul is said to animate the bodies. Then, we will study figures such as Daniel Sennert, Sir Kenelm Digby, Nathaniel Highmore, William Harvey, Pierre Gassendi and Robert Boyle.
