Taiwanese(Taiwanese Hokkien) and Taiwanese Mandarin(Chinese) are the two most spoken languages in Taiwan. They are two completely different languages and are not mutually intelligible at all. On the other hand, the mutual intelligibility of Taiwanese(Taiwanese Hokkien) and Chinese Hokkien is about the same as German and Yiddish.

Taiwanese is also the language you need to know to really be able to understand Taiwanese culture and integrate into the Taiwanese society.
