Hi, I'm Rika Inami, Tanka Poet and live in Akita Prefecture, Japan.
Tanka is the traditional short poetry in Japan.
I mainly write it on nature. Composing Tanka, I intend to leave myself to nature and express myself as well as the description of nature at once.
In the past few years, I have been translating my original Japanese tanka poetry into English and composing in both Japanese and English.
We Japanese have composed Tanka for over 1300 years, so it can be said to be our rhythm.
Although Tanka has a much longer history than haiku, and it is still a step behind haiku in terms of global popularity. Tanka, like haiku, is a structured poem that expresses things including ourselves in a moment, but it is 5-7-5-7-7 (31 mora) rather than 5-7-5 (17 mora) haiku. The longer 14 mora, the more you can put yourself in it. It is the structured poetry in which you can express your daily feelings and emotions more humanity than haiku. In brief, it is lyricism.
I hope to spread Tanka around the world.
It can be said that it is the Internet age, at which people can express themselves and get information in a short time. Also, due to the pandemic of the new coronavirus called COVID-19, the times are changing in various ways. I think that our thoughts and feelings are beyond description. However, still more living in such age, I believe that a poem can be created from a fragment of a life moment and encourages us. It is a poetic spirit that wells up in our heart. You will see joy and beauty in your life even though you are under the painful, pitiful and challenging situation.
Just at this age, I recommend you to compose tanka poetry.
Why don't you try to express such feelings and sensitivities in Tanka?
I hope to help you with expressing your poetic mind into a poem called Tanka.
I look forward to hearing from you.
