A Suzuki 講師的自我介紹

Hello everyone. It’s nice meeting you. My name is Suzuki. I live in Istanbul, Turkey with my partner, two children, and our cat. My favorite pastime activity is gardening in my terrace.
On Cafetalk, I offer two types of lessons: my main occupation (tutoring elementary to high school students) and my hobby (of making more friends who love science!).

【Career History】
In Japan, I worked as a high school teacher (mathematics and physics) as well as a cram school teacher for 9 years. After arriving in Istanbul, I have been teaching Japanese children for 6 years at Japanese schools, supplementary schools, and as a private tutor, totaling about 15 years of teaching experience.
I can handle mathematics and general science for elementary to junior high level subjects. For high school, I can only handle mathematics and physics.

【My Lesson Motto】
“Experience is the best teacher.”
Even if you think you understand something by having someone teach it to you, you will not learn it just by listening to someone talk about it. I am convinced that you cannot learn unless you actually solve the questions yourself, with a pen and notebook in your hand, and by using your own hands from start to finish.
I want my students to actually write in their notebooks until they get the correct answer, while receiving some assistance. Once you get to the end, I want you to repeat the solution over and over again on paper so that you don’t forget it.
“A picture is worth a thousand words.”
This is also from personal experience. Sometimes, no matter how enthusiastically a teacher explains something with body language and hand gestures, it doesn’t really hit home. Years later, when I read a book or watched a TV program, I would say to myself, “Ah, so that’s what the teacher was talking about!”
Based on this experience, I always try to give lessons that appeal directly to visual understandings.


【My Lesson Style】
Due to the functions I need to use in my lessons (such as the whiteboard and screen sharing functions), I ask you to take my lessons using Zoom.

☆ Zoom Whiteboard function
The student and tutor will solve problems together using screen share.
(↓Here, the writing in black is from the student, and the red is from the tutor.)

・It would be easier if you have a tablet pen, as you can use it to write on the screen (although you can also write with your fingers).
・If you have a question you would like to ask, please leave a copy of the question in advance and I will prepare the material for you to use on the whiteboard function prior to your next lesson.
・The main focus of my lessons will be on the time that students actually solve the questions on the screen, rather than just having them listen to what I have to say (←Practice makes perfect).

☆ Screen Sharing Function
If you feel that “oh, I don’t really understand this...” when I am explaining only orally or by notes, I can explain to you by using screen sharing, and citing video materials (such as free educational materials from YouTube). I am sure it will be easier to understand once you see it in video, instead of having it explained verbally over and over again (←A picture is worth a thousand words).

Please be aware that my camera will be turned off while we use the whiteboard or screen sharing features, so I will be explaining verbally during those times.


【General flow prior to your lesson】
① If you are not sure what part of the subject you are stuck on, or what you want to focus on (studying for an exam or following up on your everyday studies), or how long you want the lesson to be etc., please feel free to contact me for a consultation in advance.
 →I offer “counseling” sessions.
② Once your lesson request has been confirmed
・If you have any materials you would like to use, please send an image or document file of the page you want to focus on at least 24 hours before your scheduled lesson time (you can use the “attachments” tab on the lesson request page. A picture taken with your smart phone is enough.)
 →I will prepare the lesson material for Zoom Whiteboard.
If you don’t have any particular learning materials and would like the tutor to choose:
 →Printouts may be provided by the tutor prior to your lesson (I will use the “attachments” tab on the lesson request page).
③ Please have your Zoom and Cafetalk page open and ready approximately 5 minutes prior to your scheduled lesson time.
 →Please wait for the lesson to start.

【Recommend for the following students:】
・When you have a problem that they just can’t figure out on your own.
Students who cannot figure out what is wrong with their solution by  simply comparing it with the explanations provided. Students who cannot find calculation errors on their own. Students who need to review for mock exams, regular exams, homework, etc.
・Students who need to study hard in a short period of time before an exam.
・Students who know their weak points and want to overcome them in a short period of time.
・Students who want to develop a habit of studying. Students who want to study regularly.
・Students who are currently living abroad and want to learn Japanese school content before returning to Japan.
