Learning through Games

T Mun Yee

A great way to check that a learning outcome is achieved is by reviewing our understanding through an assessment. Does that sound rather intimidating?

Well, I've been tinkering with how to make learning assessment fun: Playing a game! That helps reduce the scare-factor by more than half, if not totally removing it. When learning is an enjoyable game, learners of any age would be motivated to return to the learning platform continuously, truly making it a lifelong activity. Retention of learning would be higher too because facts can be presented in an interesting way.

Every teacher may have their own style for doing this. There are many online resources to help with the process as well. I tapped into one of the resources found and this is the link to one I created and used online as an experiment.

Copy and paste it on your browser and the game will run. This game is set up as a challenge which ends 27 days from today, 26 August 2023. Only forty players will have the opportunity to play so don't wait, try the game now.

For those reading after the time and number limits have exceeded, or for those rather apprehensive about trying but still curious, I share with you the visuals of the question boards here. The main photo above is one of them.

Feel free to comment or drop me a line if you have a question or wish to share your experience, teacher or learner (I'll always be both). Have a great week ahead and have fun as you learn!

Postscript added on 8 Oct 2023: Note: Thank you to those who have written to let me know you enjoy reading my column but daren't take a lesson because there are parts you don't really understand. I assure you we'll always speak at a level which suits you so that we can enjoy a casual conversation. Also, we can go through words and sentences that are difficult so that we learn together. Perhaps, they will be easy then and we'll always have something to talk about. No stress!
