Word formation lesson for higher level students, and those interested in Cambridge Advanced Use of English.
課程介紹
I'll give you a word to play with: consider. Can you form many more words from 'consider'? Think about prefixes and suffixes; think also about word types such as adjectives and adverbs. Go ahead...
considerate (adjective); inconsiderate (adjective); considerately (adverb); inconsiderately (adverb); consideration (noun); inconsideration (noun); considerable (adjective); inconsiderable (adjective); considerably (adverb); inconsiderably (adverb)
Well done! Now let's spend some time studying the pronunciation, meaning and use of these words...
inconsiderate
If you are inconsiderate you don't think about other people's needs and feelings, you are being a little selfish. "It was inconsiderate of you not to give up your seat for that elderly lady" "Why didn't you give up your seat for that elderly lady? I can't believe how inconsiderate you were!" Notice how in the first example we can use the structure 'inconsiderate + of somebody + to do / not to do'.
considerably
Very much, a great deal or to a large extent. "The fortunes of the company have improved considerably since the arrival of the new director" "The neighbourhood is considerably noisier than it used to be"
etc. etc. ...
Are there any collocations or special phrases which use this lesson's words? Yes. considered opinion "It is my considered opinion that the second candidate should be offered the position" 'considered opinion' is a judgement reached after long and careful thought.
etc. etc. ...
Your homework is to scour the internet for example sentences and to write some of your own.
*****
I hope this has given you a good illustration of what to expect in this class. From just one word we can spin a lesson that will enrich your vocabulary and give you confidence in your English. This course is particularly good for CAE students.
