About me
Hi! I'm Ashley. I'm a linguist and tutor in English and Japanese. I'm from the US but I have worked for many years in the publishing industry in the UK working on dictionares and grammar books for many languages including English and Japanese as well as student textbooks for international students (outside of the UK).
I can also speak (some) Japanese, and have studied other languages as well (Chinese, Korean, Russian, French) so I know how it can be to learn another language. (I studied abroad at Waseda University in Tokyo and love to travel in Japan!) I can understand some difficult areas for Japanese-speakers learning English. I also have a masters degree in Linguistics from the University of Oxford.
My Qualifications
- Masters degree in Linguistics (University of Oxford, UK)
- Masters degree in Publishing (Oxford Brookes University, UK)
- Bachelors degree in Japanese and Psychology (University of California Santa Barbara, USA)
- Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Certificate (i-to-i, UK)
My tutoring and teaching style
I take an individual approach to learning and am happy to work with you to determine what would work best for you. I think the most important thing about learning a language is that it should be fun as well as educational. If it's fun, you'll find it easier to stay motivated and your learning will really benefit. Even if you are studying English for professional development, we can still find a way to make it fun!
My interests and hobbies
You can probably tell I do like learning languages! I also like linguistics and psychology as well.
My hobbies include singing karaoke, watching TV dramas, and reading manga. I also enjoy pilates, meditation, swimming, and ice skating.
I'm a big fan of nature and love going for walks in the woods! I also really love dogs!
I hope you'll book a lesson with me soon!
