Hello! I am Moeko, a piano and English tutor, who lived in Illinois from the age of 1 to 11, spent junior high, high school and university in Japan before coming to the USA again for graduate school, where I am currently working towards a Doctor of Musical Arts in piano at Stony Brook University in New York. I have been based in Japan since 2021, performing and teaching piano and English conversation both online and offline.

I can flexibly accommodate you in piano, English conversation, both separately (e.g. English conversation in the first half and piano in the second half) or both at the same time (English piano lessons). Please feel free to contact me on a free consultation♪

ーPrevious experienceー

Began teaching private piano lessons while being a student at the Elisabeth University of Music.

As a Graduate Assistant at Illinois State University, I taught Group Piano. Taught a wide range of practical skills to undergraduates, including music theory, harmonising, improvisation and chord reading, as well as performance technique.

Since moving to New York, I worked with students of all ages and levels, from children to adults, at the New York Music and Arts School; from 2020, I am teaching entirely online, using Zoom; I have been teaching for NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) grading examinations, and many have passed the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music).

As a Teaching Assistant at Stony Brook University, I tutored undergraduate and postgraduate students in piano, as well as accompanying choral and soloists.

ーGoals as a tutorー

I believe that what is needed to improve in both piano and English conversation is 'quality practice' and 'sustained practice'.

Quality practice means:

  1. Analysing the problem - Finding the difference between your ideal expression and your current situation
  2. Goal-setting - long-term goals and the goals you want to achieve during the month/week/day of practice.
  3. Experimentation - Try out different ways of solving the problem.

If these are done efficiently, progress can be made even with short practice sessions. However, to improve your physical skills and to make what you practise stick, you also need a certain amount of practice - just as it is impossible to run a full marathon in one day's practice, both piano and English conversation need to be practised continuously, as much as possible, every day (I recommend six days a week). The key to continuity is to make it a habit and to enjoy it. You should face piano/English conversation the same way you brush your teeth every day, and recognise that practising is fun, like playing a game or watching YouTube. If you don't do these two things, even if you continue to do it every day out of spite, in the future it will be imprinted in your brain that practising = painful and something you hate.

As a tutor, my aim is to help each student to think independently about this 'quality practice' and 'amount of practice' and to continue to do so autonomously.

Whether it's a monthly/weekly lesson, daily practice coaching (until you get into the habit of going to the piano/English conversation every day, especially if I can work with you to set goals for the day), or whether you want to "learn to play this piece", "have your performance heard before a performance", "need pronunciation coaching for English conversation" or "need an English essay corrected", please contact me!

ーProfileー

After graduating from the Elisabeth University of Music with a degree in piano from the Department of Performance, I moved to the United States and completed a master's degree in piano at Illinois State University. I studied at the Professional Studies Department of the Manhattan School of Music in New York and performed in the winners' concert of the Rondo FORMA Competition at Carnegie Hall. I am currently a doctoral student in the graduate piano department at Stony Brook University.

She has an EIKEN Level 1 and TOEFL ibt 116.
