子供の頃からファンタジー・フィクションが大好き。ハリーポッターを始め、ロード・オブ・ザ・リング、ホビットを読んだり、観たりして育った私には、ワクワクするトピック。

最近ではファンタジーなロープレイゲームを自作して、友人と遊ぶのが趣味なんです^^

そこで今回は、「魔法」というワクワクするトピックをテーマに、私と一緒に魔法について英語で話す練習をしませんか？

一問一答形式で、魔法について話しましょう♪
ゆっくり考えれば作れる英語の文も、とっさに聞かれたらなんて答えよう？

外国人の友達や、英語を勉強しているお友達同士で質問しあうのも楽しいはず。言えない文があれば調べたり、カフェトークの先生に聞いたりするのはどうでしょうか。

”It depends on what you call ‘magic’. ”

（あなたが何を「魔法」と呼ぶかによります）

☆議論を上手に展開するためのポイント☆

*Remember that when answering a question, there are always more than two answers. If you don’t like the ‘yes’ or ‘no’ choices, then argue the middle and show where there is synergy.  Or you can agree with conditions and talk about why those conditions are necessary. Or you can talk about the definition of terms in order to change the question itself. You can even dismiss the question entirely and explain why another question is more appropriate and answer that one!

*質問に答えるときは、常に3つ以上の答えがあることに注意します。 「はい」とも「いいえ」とも選択をしたくない場合、その中間・妥協点について議論し、どこにその部分があるかを示してください。もしくは、状況や状態に賛成（同意）して、それらがなぜ必要なのかについて話すこともできます。 または、質問自体を変えるために、用語を定義することも可能です。 質問を完全に否定して、別の質問がより適切である理由を示し、その質問に答えるのです。

ーDo you think magic is something good or dangerous?

It depends on what you call ‘magic’. Although the kind that we see in TV and movies may not be real, there is something called ‘magical thinking’. Wikipedia defines it as the belief that one’s ideas, thoughts, actions, words, or use of symbols can influence the course of events in the material world. In short, it is the belief that one can use magic, and it’s not as unusual as you might think.

*define = 定義する　

An inherent part of the human condition, most children experiment with this sort of thinking when they are younger and it is one of the ways that they come to understand the physical causality of our world. Yet it may not ever entirely go away because even adults are prone to apply it in limited situations to explain what may otherwise be unexplainable, such as questions of faith and death.

*inherent = 本来備わっている 　human condition = 人間の条件 　 physical causality = 物理的な因果関係 　 prone to = ～する傾向がある、～しがちである

I think that magical thinking is dangerous when it is used where practical thinking would result in a more effective solution. For example, a parent should heal a child by exploring their medical options rather than consulting with a psychic. In these situations, there are clear benefits that people sacrifice to the altar of their own ego. However, in cases where there is no practical solution, I think that magical thinking can bring a sense of control to a situation that cannot be controlled. For example, is there really harm in letting yourself believe that helping someone in need will bring you good fortune through karma?
